How did the Black Rock get there?

I'm new to the DB and this might have been said a hundred times so excuse me if this thought is a repeat. I believe the Black Rock wound up on the middle of the island by accident when someone and I don't know who moved the island and when the Island appeared in it's new location it just rose out of the water where the Black Rock was sailing therefore placing it in the middle of the Island. I know some have said that the BR was sailing to the Island in the last episode but Jake and MIB never said it was the BR so that could have been any ship.

So it took a lot longer than I ever expected, but I'm back into podcasting again. It's truly amazing what sleep deprivation can do to your podcasting schedule. I'm pumped to go back to school at Lost University and equally psyched for season six. Honestly, I have no idea where the hell this whole thing is going. I've never been more excited for Lost than now.

I've got a ton of theories, some good and some absolutely shameless attempts to absolve myself of past predictions. I've been bouncing them off of Chris and I hope those of you still willing to listen will join us in the discussion. Thanks to Lotto, SHC1970 and the forum regulars for keeping this board semi-active.

Now that we've got our initial finale reactions out of the way we're going to go back and let everyone listen to exactly how right/wrong we were 6 months ago. Starting with "Dead is Dead," we'll be posting all of the reaction episodes I never got to finish editing during early stage diaper detail. Then we'll go back and flesh out our feelings on the season finale. And time permitting we'll finally get to our newly updated Benjamin Linus character analysis episode. If we're really ahead of schedule we'll put out the Shepard Family Tree Analysis episode.

Thanks for your patience and I promise Chris and I will make it worth your hard drive space during the hiatus and all through the final season.

Question. Who's coming out of the Taweret Suites?

1) fLocke and Ben together. fLocke escapes into the jungle and gives up appearance of John Locke. Ben is Ben. Can't happen as Terry O'Quinn would be out of a job

2) Jacob as Ben. fLocke kills Ben and flees into tunnels as Smokey. Jacob takes Ben's body. Again, Terry O'Quinn out of work.

3) fLocke as Ben. fLocke kills Ben and takes his form. Who would know?

6) Ben and Jacob (in spirit). Jacob's spirit take on John Locke's appearance. Smokey creeps out the back entrance. They put John Locke and Ben's bodies in the Statue where Smokey can't get them. Now John Locke IS Jacob.

Confused? Other available bodies include Christian Shephard, Claire (unsure of status), Keamy (did he get buried?), Charlie, Alex (she's been used), possibly Sayid. Can you think of any others? Ben did not bury Roger Linus. Did Danielle bury Motand? Yemi's body went missing.

Juliet is buried in Swan Station. But I think her spirit is in Smokey. Thus the grab for fLocke and the pass on handcuffed gals.

We need body musical chair rules!

Whatever the Case May Be

POV from camera looking right to left through jungle floor. Camera pans up tree to find Kate picking guavas. She slides down and has a drink of water. She starts to walk away. Whatever is watching her is following right behind her. A twig snaps. She knows someone is following her. She picks up a rock and throws. It hits Sawyer's knee.

I think that I'll give the 5 cent tour for this episode.

It's a Kate centric episode with a flashback. Sawyer and Kate find the waterfall. SPOILER: This location is the site for the return to the island in S5 for Kate, Hurley and the guitar. The pond holds two bodies, a man (red tie, wrong choice mister) and woman (does that look like a gray jumpsuit?) still in plane seats. Lodged under the man is a silver Haliburton case. Inside the case are four 9mm guns, ammo and personal effects. Kate runs a con on island paralleling her flashback. She uses men to get what she needs. She lies. Except when she tells the truth. Kate has serious trust issues. So both cons result in her getting the same object, a toy plane.

I have lost track of this plane. It is still on the island as far as I know. Let me know if you think otherwise. Maybe that's why she had to go back . . . . . lol

The guns will play a part in upcoming episodes.

Secondary story lines abound: Sayid gets Shannon to help translate Danielle's scribbles - however I am not sure that Danielle is the originator of the maps. Unclear. Shannon gives us another full body sun bathing experience. Boone stares creepily at Shannon and Sayid as they start to get cozy.

Boone and fLocke have been 4 days trying to open the hatch. Looks like Boone is doing the work and fLocke still giving the orders. Boone brings the yellow handled axe to fLocke. This parallels Sawyer's attempts to unlocke the case.

If you are lucky enough to remember the ape v. Samsonite commercials of the 70s 80s then you would get the humor of the Sawyer v. Haliburton case in the rocky ravine. Michael suggests that only "impact velocity" would work when no key was handy. Apparently Haliburton's can't be picked. SOB. Michael: if you pick the lock "I'll put you on my back and fly us to LA" Sawyer: "You better find yourself a runway daddy, cuz there isn't a lock I cant' pick." Just interesting given that there is a runway being built and Sawyer's about to join that crew.

Kate tries, unsuccessfully, to steal the case. So she get's Jack to do it for her.

Jack and Sun play medical charades.

Jack threatens to withhold medical treatment (antibiotics) to get the case. Wow, what happend to 'do no harm' vows, Dr. Shephard.

Rose helps Charlie deal with his recent ordeal by suggesting that he is not special and must work like everyone else. Rose also reiterates that she thinks Bernard is alive. She leads Charlie in prayer after Charlie cries, "Help me."

An unnatural (prop reduction program) tide takes away the fuselage and survivors move down the beach to set up new camp.

Question: If Jack buried the Marshall, dug him up to get the key, did they rebury him? Why wasn't he buried instead of burned with the rest of the bodies in the fuselage?

Kate's got palming skillz. Case is open. Envelope with "Personal Effects" and then a smaller envelope with the toy plane. Add these to our envelope collection.

Again, season 1 hair and makeup were seriously glam.

I like Jack's shaved head better.

Just a Summertime "Hi"

Chris and Clay and all Dharma Dummies,

Just saying "hi" to all as summer comes to an end. Ok, I realize that summer officially ends in September, but I'm seeing school supplies dominate the landscape, so the end is near.

Hope everyone has had a least one day's dip in a pool, lake, ocean, a large multi-flavored ice cream with sprinkles, visits to or from family and friends, and plenty of time to read, sing, and dance into the night.

Disclaimer: These reflections are being made 2009 after the end of Season 5. It's now August and ComicCon has come and gone, ARG is on, Mysteries of the Universe and LostU enrollment starts in September - what a summer!

All The Best Cowboys picks up exactly where Raised By Another leaves off - Sayid in the caves begin tended to by Dr. Jack Shephard. fLocke, Kate, Walt, Michael, Shannon and Boone are also at the caves. Claire and Charlie are on the footpath back to the beach with a menacing Ethan starring them down. Sawyer is at the beach. Sun and Jin do not appear in this episode.

Enter Hurley: He informs everyone that Ethan is NOT on the flight manifest. Jack asks (yells) if anyone has seen Ethan. Michael says he went to gather firewood. Jack asks (yells) if anyone has seen Charlie. fLocke replies, "He went after Claire." fLocke tries to get Jack to be the good doctor and to stay with Sayid (he will make this request again). He feels responsible for not noticing anything "off" with Ethan as they have spent time together hunting. Jack and fLocke find Claire's bag just off the path (which looks mighty flat - where's her stuff? It was so full, Charlie offered to carry). fLocke, holding his knife as usual, finds drag marks, signs of a struggle and 3 sets of prints. "They've been taken." and "Shhhhhhhhhh." Jack asks, "How can one man drag off two people, one of them pregnant." fLocke, "You're asking the wrong question. Not how. Why?" He tells Jack that Sayid said there were others. Jack is skepical.

There has been lots of discussion as to whether Ethan was alone in his kidnapping of Claire or whether had help. 48 Days will show us that Others do not make footprints or noise. So it is very possible that Ethan did have help.

fLocke points (with his knife) the direction Ethan has taken. We see Jack and running (camera pan like opening of Pilot) overlaid with beeping of heart monitor. FLASH Jack is in surgery trying to revive someone who has died on the table. "Come on back." (recurring lines). Christian Shephard is also in the OR, "Call it." (daddy issues). Christian Shepard's pulls his mind control moves on Jack to sign a false medical report (check out the red pen - repeated prop for young James Ford and Claire at the adoption agency. Jack has inherited this talent: See Roger Linus in the school room).

fLocke returns to cave to retrieve more knives, Kate and Boone. Walt wants to use Vincent to track Claire (Shannon will try this in a future epi to find Walt). Walt is sure that Mr. Locke is a warrior. Hurley is one too - a warrior of a sort?

They find Jack going in circles "not much of a search grid, but we wouldn't have found you otherwise." Jack was standing still, gazing. fLocke asks again, "go back, be the doctor, let me be the hunter." Jack replies, "Follow me."

They take a break at 4:25 p.m. Jack thinks it might kill him to give fLocke some space.

They find Charlie's "L" and "A" tape from fingers.

Here the hunters split:

Group L: fLocke's attention has changed. He is now on the track to the hatch. He wants Jack to come with him.

Group A: Kate 'fesses up to being a tracker, a skilled learned from step-dad. fLocke, "You're just full of surprises." and she and Jack continue on Ethan's trail.

But first a message from our sponsor: Walt's Incites, channeling island history today and everyday, 1) lying about your name is stupid, 2) Ethan was on the island before we crashed 3) ten years olds should never be taken for granted, 4) Walt's my name, backgammon's my game.

Group L: fLocke uses a red shirt to mark trail. Boone explains the plot device for the 'next to die' from Star Trek. fLocke says he's not a big fan. John says that he was a regional collector for a box company. Boone's not buying it. Another break, 15 minutes since last sign of trail. fLocke gives us some indication of premonition or loop knowledge: "going to be raining in 1 minute, give or take a few seconds" and "dangerous terrain ahead." He's been or experienced this before. He gives Boone a chance to go back. It is important for our Losties to make their own choices/paths.

Group A: Kate and Jack find the "T" only Jack hears the whispers and Claire's screams. He climbs the muddy slope, falls, disoriented, stepped on the chest by Ethan who threatens: "if you do not stop following me, I will kill one of them. Do you understand?" They fight. Ethan wins. "No more warnings." FLASH Jack watches his dad use the hand to the shoulder touch to convince a man that they did everything they could to save his wife. The shoulder touch is what convinced Jack to sign a false report. FLASH Kate finds Jake but Jack doesn't share Ethan's visit. "Not letting him do this. Not again." FLASH Jack changes his testimony at the medical hearing when it is reveals that the deceased was pregnant. Christian Shephard operated under the influence of alcohol, possibly causing death of patient.

Kate finds Charlie hanging from tree. The "E" is on his pinky finger. Kate climbs with knife (thank you fLocke) and cuts him down as Jack holds him up. Charlie appears dead. " . . . not breathing." (Here's that great LOST music, gong, gong, gong) . . . shot of Charlie with halo of shreaded vines. CPR. Kate holds his hand. "Jack, he's not coming . . . " Is this Charlie's first death? CPR. Charlie takes deep breath.

Episode wrap scene: back at cave, Michael, Walt, Hurley, Kate, Jack, Sayid, Shannon. Charlie, "I didn't see anything, hear anything. I don't remember anything." (maybe the Others used those nasty dart thingys) "Claire. . . . all they wanted was Claire." Shannon is worried when Boone doesn't return. Cut to fLocke

" . . . DON"T YOU FEEL IT. IT.

Yes. fLocke. We all feel it.

Now Boone wants to go back. "Boone, you need this more than I do." He tosses the flashlight, short. It hits the hatch door. Okay, I'm just saying, if you walked for hours in the dark in a jungle and just decided to toss a flashlight to the ground, what are the chances that you would hit a buried hatch door?

Thud.

Island Claire in cave wakes up screaming. She had blood all over from self-inflicted wounds caused when she dug her nails into her hands. Jack's question, "What was the date that you found out you were pregnant." triggers flashback to that time. We meet Tom the painter and father of Aaron. We see some of his work in the background which are similar in style to those in the Swan Station. (I thought it was interesting that he was confused as to the colors red and pink on the pregnancy test. A color-challendged painter?)

Claire works at the "Fish and Fry" and Hurley at "Mr. Cluck's."

Tom and Claire try to make it work.

Claire goes with friend to astrologist. He knows she's pregnant, he refused to continue reading and gives money back. They leave.

THREE MONTHS LATER Tom comes home and says, "I can't do this." and they separate.

Claire in red jacket goes back to Mr. Malkin for another $200 reading. He knows Tom has left. He saw a blurry thing, blurry's bad (Smokey?). "This is important you, yourself, must raise this child . . . danger surrounds this baby. There is no happy life. Not for this child, not without you. Ms. Littleton, this baby needs your protection."

Richard Malkin calls Claire late in the night to tell her about a plan. She's on her way to adoption agency the next day, and hangs up.

The office of the adoption agency She requested that the adoptive parents sing "Catch A Falling Star to the baby" The pen to finalize the papers doesn't work, neither the does the second one. The adoptors offer pen. Claire changes her mind. She goes back to Malkin. He gives her $12,000 to give her baby to couple in LA. (not strangers, good people).

Jack comes down to the beach to bring water, take fish. Kate is standing still at the water's edge. No she's sinking. In the sand. They talk about Claire.

Black shirt red pants Claire writes in her diary. Charlie brings tea.

Charlie tell Claire he's had a bad dream: driving a bus and teeth are falling out , mom eating biscuits and everything smells of bacon.

Someone enters the caves with torch (we later learn that this was Danielle), it's night, Claire hears a knife being unsheathed, . A hand goes over her mouth. There's a serrated knife. She screams "Help me." Charlie, Ethan, Hurley, Michael, and Jack are there. She describes a needle and that he wanted to hurt my baby.

During the search for the intruder Hurley comes up with a plan to take names and find out who's who, lay down the law. Hurley starts with John Locke from Tuscan, CA who was in Australia looking for something, "it found me."

"Lance, right?" "No, Ethan." who is filling homemade basket with fruit. Ethan Rom. from Ontario. He asks what's the census for.

Jack talks with Claire at the cave. Jack wants to drug her with mild sedative. She gets mad, packs and leaves for the beach. "It was safe at the beach, it's not safe here." Charlie follows her and offers to carry bags. She goes into labor. Water breaks. Claire sends Charlie to get Jack. He slips and tells her he's a drug addict. Charlie runs into Ethan and tells him to go and get Jack at the caves. Charlie goes back to Claire.

"I'm not suppose to be here." Claire tells Charlie about the psychic. (Claire's voice over flashback memory. I can't recall any other flashback that uses this technique of overdubbing.) "There was no couple in Los Angeles. He knew about the plane and what was going to happen. He knew." Claire's labor stops. She agrees to go back to the caves. Aaron kicks.

Hurley continues his detective work: Shannon Rutherford, age 20, Caphole Island. He explains that THERE WAS AN INCIDENT at the caves. Caves receive nickname: Rap Caves.

Manifest with names of the dead crossed off is with Sawyer. Hurley visits Sawyer. He is reading and wearing unusual glasses. We can see cigarette's n the table. (Does anyone else on the island smoke?, I only ask this as we have a lose end at the Pearl Station involving a burning cigarette.) "Dude, you could use the points." Like a game, Sawyer needs some good points and gives up the manifest. Hurley receives nickname points: Stay Puff.

Cut to Sayid running thru jungle using stick, his leg is injured. He enters the caves and tells them about the french woman. "I had to come back. I had to come back. WE not alone." Another reference to returning [Boone in the water, Jack in S3). Nice face fLocke. Hurley runs into the caves. He has discovered that one of them is not from the plane - Ethan Rom, the other man. We jump to Ethan starring down Claire and Charlie on the path.

Thud.

Solitary

After two days of soul searching Sayid finds the power/cable to the DI Looking Glass Station but chooses to go inland to find the source instead of in the ocean.

Caught and hanging by one leg, Sayid is taken by Danielle. We'll see many Danielle traps (netting catches Ben, Jack & Kate, land-mind triggers with large spike balls (Hurley), fake smoky signals). Busy gal.

Sayid regains consciousness to a male voice asking, "Where is Alex?" It continues to change pitch and language (English, German, Spanish, Italian, French) until it becomes that of Rousseau. So, is it Sayid's hearing or Smokey talking? Just asking. Similarly, the numbers are recorded (after the incident 1977) using the voices of Hurley, Jack and possibly others coming thru on Montand's transceiver and again on Ajira 316.

Electrocution is Danielle's method of interrogation. It triggers us to our first Sayid flashback. Sayid "Stop", Prisoner "Stop" Flashbacks in LOST continue follow a pattern or voice or action triggers. I'll try to point these out where they pop up. Season 5 used this method repeatedly. It is established that Sayid is, in fact, a torturer. He will kill and assassinate at a steady clip right to the end. Enjoy watching it if that's your thing. I'm moving back to Danielle.

Danielle's home is an underground bunker. She's got Sayid tied up on what appears to be bed springs. Sayid, beds, women, violence. We will be treated to so many "oh, no" moments where Sayid is blinded by beauty (S4 and S5).

Danielle turns her focus away from Alex to Nadia whose photos Sayid carries in an envelope with his name in Arabic on it (connection to James Ford's envelope, Kate's airplane, Ben's x-ray envelope (mobisode 12), Penny's envelope, Locke's sucide note - I digress, no clue why the envelope seemed more interesting here?) She wants to know who wrote the inscription on the back. Danielle reads Arabic. So why ask what the inscription reads? Is she testing Sayid to see if he will lie or tell the truth.

She shows Sayid the music box "it was gift from my love." She injects Sayid with sedative. Now you have to believe that the needle and sedative did not come from her French expedition. So where does she acquire guns, battery, medical supplies? She says that she is alone. I'm going to assume that the discrepancies in her story S1 and what plays out in S5 will not be a factor. But this is our first mention of the Black Rock and whispers. Neither has been full explained and I'm looking for answers in S6.

Flash jump is triggered by "alone" Danielle and Nadia, both in solitary confinement.

Sayid wakes up tied to a chair and fixes the music box. There's a noise outside, maybe a bear. So she knows about the polar bears, but not about monsters? Sayid escapes taking map, pack and rifle, but leaves Nadia's photos. He runs into Danielle, gun to gun. Sayid fires. Nothing. This where we find out how Robert Montand was killed. We'll see that scene in S5. She tells about a 'sickness' we now know as Smokey.

"You'll find me in the next life if not in this one." Sayid reveals the inscription.

Danielle reveals that Alex was her child.

Was the inscription like a secret code? Sayid is allowed to leave, but hears the whispers on his way back to the beach.

Not Solitary Beach/Cave People

"Dr. Quinn" has no guilt or a ticket into heaven. Sawyer is left to tend to his wounds as no one else cares. "She does." Ouch! Jack heads back to the cave where he tends his flock. Vincent is there having a drink. Nerves and stress are causing outbreaks of rashes and hives. If only they had something to do beside survive!

Hurley's bonfire induced dream is interrupted by Ethan and fLocke dropping luggage bags. This is our first look at the Other Man who is hunting with fLocke. Seems Ethan has a gift for tracking rodents at night. And fLocke keeps winking his right eye. Hurley creates the first Island Open with found golf equipment. (Hurley will be our LOST games guru, playing table tennis, basketball, golf, chess, backgammon. He will see him honing his skills at mental institution).

While everyone is playing golf, Walt finds himself a new friend in Mr. Locke. Walt wants to be a hunter.

Not my favorite episode from Season 1. Probably because of the focus on torturing and I think I remember being totally confused at the introduction of Danielle. Wild theories about redemption, the island being Hell, everyone was dead. lol not much has changed!

Confidence Man

While James Ford has taken the name and life style of con-man Sawyer we are treated to another confidence game on the island. When you gain someone's confidence, someone's trust, they are more easily manipulated. Let's start with James Ford, or Sawyer as we know him in 2004.

Honestly, is there such a thing a too many shirtless Sawyer scenes? No. This is our first of two ocean-to-beach exits for James Ford. Kate gets a good look and doesn't seem impressed. (Juliet will be the recipient of the second watery exit.) They banter back and forth, but the main purpose is to show the book "Watership Down" ("It's about bunnies." (Sawyer) Well, not really. It's about home and family and the dream of making a better life.) This book starts the wheels spinning.

Flashback to one of Sawyer's confidence games in play. A pretty lady, Jess and dumb husband, David fall for all of Sawyer's moves. David comments over lunch "there's a loop-hole" in the oil contract. Shades of S5. But I'll tackle the island drama unfolding first.

Boone, can you please stop stealing stuff? Asking nicely, maybe with a kiss, would have served your purpose better. So rifling through Sawyer's stash gets you a beating. The sound dub over is the end of this scene is "This is going to hurt," which is actually said by Jack. He's treating Sayid's head wound. (But how ironic. Jack's going to get a beating from Sawyer in about 3 years) Shannon drags Boone to the cave. Boone name's Sawyer as the perp. Sayid gives a knowing looking. (Takes one to know one.)

Cut to beach. The camera follows another pair of legs, this time Claire's. She is writing in her diary. (The diary. Dang. I lost track of that object. Anyone know who's got it? It must contain some great stuff.) Charlie brings her water and tries to convince her to move to the caves. They will do the laundry together and dream of favorite foods (peanut butter) establishing their relationship.

Meanwhile, back at the caves, Boone reveals Shannon is asthmatic and she needs her inhalers. He thinks Sawyer has them as he has his book, Watership Down. Jack jumps into action and confronts Sawyer on the beach (Sawyer is reading the letter AGAIN). Jack makes demands and Sawyer describes Jack's style as a "commie sheriff-fest in Cave Town." So Kate, Sayid, Jack and James Ford will all have sheriff/chief of security positions by S6. They almost come to blows. They are stopped by Kate. (and again by Juliet in S5). Jack bails out because "we're not savages yet." Does that make them savages by S5? Kate tells Jack that Sawyer "says we have a connection." Sawyer's got some great lines for the girls, Kate. But we know now that they do have a connection via Jacob's touch.

A kiss aught to do it. Kate thinks this is a disgusting idea. She's not buying his act, and she knows about the letter. Sawyer forces her to read the letter. "Dear Mr. Sawyer . . ." Kate sees Sawyer in a different light, and we get one of the great LOST looks by Kate to Sawyer.

Now to our real con-man, fLocke. Sayid is in interrogation mode and finds fLocke, knife in hand, making a point. "Where were you last night around sunset?" (note to self, island set sun is at 5 o'clock). fLocke replies "The only witness was the boar that I was skinning for our dinner." (read, witnesses = dead). He goes on to suggest that the attack and destruction of the transmitter and receiver must have been someone "who does NOT want to get off the island and is PROFITING from our current circumstances." Notice that Sayid immediately sits in a lower position facing fLocke. fLocke implies a conflict between Sawyer and Sayid. Sayid says Sawyer has an alibi. fLocke suggests that anyone who watches TV knows how to use a cigarette for a slow fuse. In Sawyer's first close up in Pilot I he dangles a cig. BAM! fLocke's offer of a red-handled knife is accepted.

Sawyer's stops by the caves for water and again refuses to give up the inhalers. Jack punches him, twice. Sawyer calls him a cowboy (daddy issues to follow).

Hurley sees a "Jedi moment" when Jack talks Shannon through her attack. Jack will use the force again in S5 on Roger Linus. Jack and Sayid make a choice to torture Sawyer to make him talk. We learn that Sayid was 5 years in the Republican Guard in "communications." So while Sayid sticks bamboo shoots (carved with the knife) up Sawyer's fingers, Sun and Michael join together to gather eucalyptus leaves to help Shannon.

Kate tries to stop the boys. Kate threatens Jack with "if you do this . . ." and Sawyer to Sayid "It doesn't have to be this way." Jack and Sayid still make the choice for violence as a solution. After some serious screaming by Josh Holloway, Jack stops the torturing and Sawyer makes a deal. The "only person I'll tell is her." "Kate?" "That's the deal." Sayid just wants to take out Sawyer's eye.

BEST LINE Sawyer to Kate: "Baby, I'm tied to a tree in a jungle of mystery. I just got tortured by a damn spinal surgeon and a genuine Iraqi. Of, course I'm serious." He just wants a kiss. She gives it. And he confesses that he never had the inhalers to start with and he found the book washed up on the shore. Kate socks him in the jaw. When Sayid hears the truth, he doesn't believe it, he believes fLocke's con. He attacks Sawyer and stabs him in the right arm severing an artery.

ANOTHER GREAT LINE: Sawyer to Jack: "Let go. I know you want to. You've been waiting for this haven't you. Waiting to be the hero again, 'cause that's want you do. Fix everything up all nice. Tell him to let go Freckles. We already made out. What else have I got to live for. Hey, Jack, something you should know. If the tables were turned, I'd watch you die."

Now go watch the end of The Incident again. Will the tables be turned in S6? And if they've only been on the island for 2 weeks, does the word "waiting" jump out as odd.

Now back to the end of Sawyer's flashback. Just as the deal is about to go through, Jess and David's son appears in the living room and Sawyer totally freaks. He drops the money and runs from the house. The scene blends to Sawyer waking up back at the beach. Was he dreaming? Kate's with him. She's got the letter, and she's figured out that Sawyer wrote it. He got a different name. Sawyer tells his story about how he became the man he was hunting. Kate gives him a look and he goes mental " . . .don't feel sorry for me," grabs the letter and yells "Get the hell out, get out"

The Moth

No previous episode clips. The Moth opens on vibrating guitar strings in close up and soon there after Jack wants Kate to call him "a broken record."

Charlie Pace

Charlie exits the caves to get high. He stands and looks about at the mouth of the cave, the reverse of fLocke's entrance to the caves in House of the Rising Sun. He hears something moving in the jungle. Do we see white smoke? The boar attacks and the shot goes into slo-mo and fades to confessional box in England 1990s. (We'll see Charlie ask Jack to take his confession later in the episode.)

The priest tells Charlie life is full of temptations, "giving into them, that's your choice. As we live our lives it's really nothing but a series of choices, isn't it." Charlie makes a decision, then gives into the temptation to become a rock star and do drugs. A beautifully shot scene backstage with mirrored images, rings on the table, and the DS ring. He cries into his hands and we flash back to island where we see Charlie running from boar which is snapped up in net trap. fLocke steps out from behind a tree and tells Charlie that "you make excellent bait." (I can't help but think this has some meaning for S6 if we see a Charlie Pace return to the island). fLocke is holding Charlie's stash and he'll give it to Charlie on the third request. fLocke flicks open his knife and tells Charlie that "having choices, making decisions based on something more than instinct is the only thing that separates you from him (the boar). Charlie wants his drugs (first request). fLocke steps over to the boar and off-screen slits the boars throat. The camera shot is of Charlie's grimace. (Odd. Charlie's father is a butcher. We will see him hacking away in another flashback. )

Charlie returns to the cave where he is had difficulty helping with the move-in and gets the "we don't need you" line from Jack. He picks up the guitar, we hear chimes and cut to Liam and Charlie outside the church. "I only care about the music" (Charlie). Has he been groomed like Faraday so that he can translate or create the code at the Looking Glass Station? Liam gives Charlie 'rock god' status. We don't whoosh back to same scene. Instead, some time has passed as now Charlie is holding a large stick pulling at the frayed end. Hurley brings him his bass guitar (maybe a scene to be repeated in S6). Charlie is thinking it's a request to play, but Hurley is just delivering a message from Jack to move out of his cave. It's being commandeered. Charlie confronts Jack in the cave.

Watch this carefully. Jack has the large flash light pointed at Charlie's chest then face. Charlie is clearly having a discussion with his brother Liam, "oh, you're going to look out for me, we'll look out for each other" and Jack notices his confusion. I think this scene might suggest that some of our Losties are experiencing similar flash memories jumps like Desmond. Charlie yells "I'm a bloody rock god." and the cave collapses. Charlie escapes, Jack is trapped. Charlie stays in a stupor, but is reactivated when Hurley gives him the order to get help at the beach and tell Kate.

The whole rock god reference now seems more relevant . God that lives in a rock, n'est pas?

He completes his mission to get help, but Kate has already left with Sayid to set up the antennae. We see Charlie standing dazed on the beach. I think he's flashing. Yep! You all everybody! Live! Whooyooo! Charlie confronts Liam after the show about stepping on his chorus. "Chill, baby brother." Camera zooms in on Liam holding heorin. Flash back to island and Charlie is triggered to find fLocke and his drugs. fLocke is busy dressing down the boar caught earlier. If you are not convinced that this is MIB, then maybe this scene will do it for you. Locke has master the art of weaving nets for catching wild boar in 2 days, caught one, expertly gutted and skinned it. Now I know that Locke has had a hugh desire to be a hunter all his life, but really, were did he get those mad island skillz?

And now the title connection moment . . .

Charlie asked for his drugs for a 2nd time. fLocke's method for drug rehab is cold turkey sandwich served up with a dollop of struggle. Again, super knowledgeable about island moths (they better than butterflies, they spin silk, are faster, stronger and emerge with at thick hind). He uses his choice not to help the moth from its cocoon as a lesson to Charlie Pace about the need for humans to struggle in order to become stronger. Charlie is a good disciple and listens carefully. Locke wipes the knife on his sleeve and uses it to point out cocoon. The knife goes off screen, and tada, Charlie's stash reappears (like bait). Slight of hand? Magic? Smokey?

Triangulation: A brief interlude.

Sayid has a plan to locate the source of the distress signal we all now know came from Danielle 16 years hence (Sayid's calculations were incorrect and you can investigate this at Lostpedia). At 5 o'clock "we'll all switch on our antennas." (Note: moths use their antennae to sense smell and can act like an airplane's gyroscope to stabilize its flight] But he needs a battery and Kate knows where to look. Sawyer. He's reading Watership Down, a rabbit story. She calls him names and points out that he has "nothing to stay in the real world for, no who who cares, nobody you miss, no one misses you." . She gets the battery. Kate and Sayid walk to her triangulation point. Boone mans the beach transmitter. Here is where Sayid and Kate discuss what happened on Flight 815 and the possibilities of surviving the crash. Sayid remembers the tailsection breaking up and our section "cartwheeling through the jungle, yet we escaped with nothing but a few scrapes." Really? Cartwheeled? In the jungle? Didn't they crash on the beach. Boone joins the party to help save Jack and leaves his job to Shannon. Sawyer volunteers to find Kate and tell her about Jack. He is rebuffed by Kate and withholds the Jack 'incident' message as payback. He finally tells her and she flies off to the caves. Sawyer stays with the transmitter. We see all the rockets go up and Sayid get's a signal and a bash on the head. We going to revisit this story again, so I will not rehash who we think bashed the Iraqi on the head. But I will note that Ben will use some similar triangulation method on a map to intercept Jack and Co. on their way to the tower in S4.

Cave-in

Michael swings into action with 8 years of construction experience. Walt wants to know where fLocke is (killing boar). Michael knows just where to dig. They open up a very small shaft that reaches Jack, but he's pinned and needs help. Charlie volunteers to go (he turns the light on and off 4 times). Half way to Jack, the shaft collapses and traps Charlie and Jack together. Jack is freed but has a dislocated shoulder. (Ok, what's with the dislocated shoulders in LOST; see Juliet). Cut to more Charlie pre-flight 815. If you can decipher the morse code knocks on Liam's door, reply this thread.

With the air running out, Jack wants to know "how long since your last fix (very pious sounding) and if he's having any hallucinations. Charlie replies, "Apart from the conversation I had with you about an hour ago in the jungle." (WOW, are we going to see future Jack visit Charlie on this day in 2004! Did this scene get shot in Season 1?) Then the moth appears to Charlie. Charlie see the light. Does Jack see it? How did it get in a completely sealed cave? The moth shows Charlie where to dig. An exit shaft is discovered. They must dig the last few feet out. See the ring of rocks where Charlie's hand emerges.

Who thinks the moth is MIB? Raise your hand through the ground. If so, then MIB did exactly the opposite of his cocoon lecture. Meaning that he helped Charlie find his way out, and, therefore, made him weaker. Think about it.

Kate's reaction to seeing Jack shows just how emotionally committed she is after only 3-4 days on the island. She makes him a sling. She tells him of Sayid's plan, and Jack hopes that they are "one step closer to getting off this island." Kate's look tells us that she's not sure this is what she wants.

fLocke is still in provider mode, roasting up his catch of the day, swatting it like a pro. Are they going to share with beach folk? "Give them to me." Charlie takes the heroin and tosses it in the fire. He's made his choice. fLocke smiles. "proud of you, Charlie. Always knew you could do it." Yeah, right. I'm fairly sure there's a Nigerian plane full of heroin just waiting to be discovered.

House of the Rising Sun or the Discovery of Adam and Eve

The short version: Sun flashbacks and her connection to flowers, Michael and Jin fight, Jin is handcuffed, Sun reveals that she speaks English, Jack takes Kate, Charlie and fLocke to caves, the bee scene, Adam (with black and white stones) and Eve are found by Kate and named by fLocke, Jack has stones?, Charlie gets guitar, two camps are formed - cave people v. beach people.

The long version:

Sun's eye opens, but point of view is not clear. Cut to Sun on the beach inhaling the scent of a bromeliad. Sun has a connection with plant/flowers and Asian art of healing. We will see her use plants to brush teeth, aid Shannon's asthma, soothe Jin's handcuff wound, provide sustenance. She certainly displays a wealth of knowledge when it come to island flora.

House of the Rising Sun gives us our first Sun flashback. Oh, those courting days! Jin provides flowers when he can't provide diamonds and a puppy when he can provide children. Jin 'sells his soul' to Mr. Piak in order to get permission to marry Sun. When Sun's finds out what 'work' he is doing , she slaps him. (There's a lot of awkward slapping in Lost. ) Sun takes steps to end the marriage with a fake kidnapping. ". . . when everyone thinks you are dead, then you can walk around freely" doth quote the interior designer specializing in wife removals.

Sun and Jin travel to Sydney, AU and from there Jin was to travel to Los Angeles to deliver the watches. We see Jack at the counter begging for them to put his dad's body on the plane. At 11:15 Sun is suppose to walk out to waiting car and disappear. Jin pulls a magic corsage out of nowhere which keeps a weeping Sun from following through on fake kidnapping plan. Sun inhales deeply and we are transported back to the island.

On the island, Sun reveals that she speaks English to Michael and clears up misunderstanding about Mr. Paik's $20,000 watch and Michael returns it to Jin "since time doesn't matter on a damn island." Watches move around the island from person to person. Is this watch still with us at the end of Season 5? There also seems to be an abundance of similar LOST fight scenes - run and tackle, punches to the face, choke. This one between Michael and Jin very similar to Jack and Sawyer S5, Jack and Ben S4(?). Makes me want to know if Jacob and MIB got into a similar fight. And further, if everything we are seeing is just a replay of their lives down to conversations, character interactions, etc. But there are now rules to their game play.

Jack, Kate, Charlie and fLocke return to the cave for water. Before entering the cave, fLocke looks around and we hear a bird screech and see a very large tree. Does he think he's being watched? Jack asked Charlie to look around for anything useful especially drugs. Watch the creepy Charlie body twitch. He steps outside to get high and steps on the volcano-shaped nest of ground dwelling bees. fLocke appears out of nowhere and tells him not to move. Then Jack and Kate appear out of nowhere (weren't they busy filling water bottles?). ANOTHER slap. Bee swarm. Jack and Kate run back into the cave and tear off their shirts. Kate discovers two very decomposed bodies.

According to Jack the bodies have been there 40-50 years from the looks of the fabric. ? I thought he was a spinal surgeon. He can tell that one is male and one is female. He notes that they did not die from any trauma to the bones. He says "someone laid them to rest here." Jack find two stones, one black, one white in a pouch. He shows Kate. He puts the stones in the pouch and as fLocke enters we can't see what Jack does with the pouch. We will assume that the stones are important. We also will note that Jack doesn't share this information with any one other that Kate. Are the stones with Jack? or are they still in the cave?

Charlie joins the two alive and two dead people and hands Kate her shirt. He says, "Bloody hell, are these the people that were here before us?" fLocke takes an interest in the discovery of the dead bodies. Notice Jacks annoyed look. Notice Kate's annoyed look. Charlie seems to have said something he shouldn't have in front of fLocke. Anyone agree? What possible motive would Kate, Jack and Charlie have from keeping discoveries from fLocke, and, in particular, the stones? Charlie recovers with lame explanation. Locke pronounces "our very own Adam and Eve" with creepy smile.

Jack and Kate head back to the beach. Jack wants to convince people to move off the beach.

fLocke makes it a point to stay at the caves with Charlie. fLocke feeds Charlie's ego by telling him that he's a DriveShaft fan. Notice that Charlie (disciple) sits cross legged in front of a standing fLocke (god-like). "I know more about pain than you think." "Look up, Charlie." And there's our guitar. If you are not on board for seeing Charlie again in S6, I suggest you jump on the train!

Jack and Kate bring water to Sayid. Thank goodness, because he's DYING of thirst. He's rather upset with Jack's plan "to start your own civilization" and he's "not going to admit defeat." Interesting choice of words. So we split into groups, the cave people and the beach people. This is the first of the many free will choices that our Losties face. Jack will bring Jin, Sun, Charlie, Claire, Hurley (where the boar is) and others to the caves. Sheriff Sayid and Sawyer persuade Kate Michael (Walt) to stay on the beach (she doesn't want to be Eve).

Cue montage: water, fire, circles. The scene ends with teary Kate "are you sure this is where you want to be."
